2008-02-01 [Future Dictator]: thank you :)
2008-02-02 [moira hawthorne]: gee it be interesting to see some real fearys ..persian... celtic... mythlogical faerys! beings of history and folklore.. Lords and ladies of the Sidhe... those who to ruled... those who you would never dream to offend... who are named 'the Good Neighbours!'..
2008-02-02 [PhoenixSilverDark]: I <3 Charles de Lint
2008-02-02 [moira hawthorne]: me to! got all his books! I want to find the faery street busker! or be suduced by night!
2008-02-03 [Jitter]: "Moonheart" was one of the most boring books I've read *yawns* Can't say I'm a fan -.-;
2008-02-03 [Jitter]: I changed my entry again but I promise it's for the last time ^^
2008-02-03 [Cia_mar]: it is a nice one Jitter!!!
2008-02-03 [Jitter]: Thanks
2008-02-03 [Artsieladie]: Well, I never have time to read unless it's for information gathering. :P I should do some more reading for enjoyment! I s'pose playing my music fills this facet, though. *shrugs* Still, I used to read a lot. Jitter, are you sure? *giggles* I don't mind, really. It's almost like a Jitter fairy slideshow & we're getting front row seats! LOL *winks*
2008-02-03 [Jitter]: I really should make made a subwiki in jitter art^^;:)
I can't say I'm reading as much as I used to but I definitely am trying to take it up again :3
2008-02-03 [Artsieladie]: I do love to read. I guess this happens when one gets a lot on one's plate. Something has to give, b/c there are just so many hours in a day. I would love to have at least, 48 hour days! lol
2008-02-03 [PhoenixSilverDark]: The book that made me love Charles de Lint was Blue Girl (the only book, at the time, of his that my public library had).
2008-02-03 [moira hawthorne]: not sure if it was Greenmantle or Yarrow I read first...
2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: Ooooh... I read Yarrow way back in highschool.
2008-02-04 [Artsieladie]: [Yuriona], it appears that [*mimi*] thinks the comment by the Guards can simply be removed by herself. I just put it back:
[*mimi*] fogwing
Image removed by the guards for copyright infringement.
2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: Well considering that this isn't the first image she's taken and tried to claim as her own work I'm not surprised. In fact, I'm not convinced that any of the images she posted in this contest were actually made by her.
2008-02-05 [Mom]: [Jitter]I love your fairy...very Art Nouveau. It reminds me of Alphonse Mucha's work.
2008-02-05 [Artsieladie]: Noted, [Yuriona]!
2008-02-05 [Morphea]: Huh.... A question.....W
2008-02-05 [Artsieladie]: We want LARGE pictures, of course! For this, you need 'wiki uploading privs'. You can either ask [Hedda], or go to the Guards page & ask there. But...I see you already did! he he Any image uploaded to Elftown, either through your house, through a wiki page, or by using the button, "upload a folder of images" found at the top of your house's page, is all considered as "uploaded to Elftown", b/c in all forms you, in fact, are uploading to Elftown. Hope this answers your question.
2008-02-05 [Morphea]: Yes thank you it did:) on the issue about the "upload a folder of images" on the top of my house`s page....i have a deep fear of that button. Last time I tried that my whole house got erased and I had to remake the whole thing....I can only believe that either I did something wrong or the button just dont like me......I am inclined to think both as higly likley because I often to wrong things and technical stuff tends to dislike my mojo ;)
2008-02-05 [Artsieladie]: *laughs* You are not alone! ...about the fear thing. I've clicked on it & said, "Whoa!" & then backed out. Oh! Did you mention this to anyone, like [Hedda] or [True, plain and simple] or mention it in the Bug Forum? Yeah, well, technical stuff can be a bit scary, especially if you don't understand how or why it works.
2008-02-05 [Morphea]: *giggles* nah I didn`t mention it to anyone. I assumed it was me or my mojo so I didn`t want to bother them.
I still get my work uploaded to Et so it is of no importance....
2008-02-07 [*mimi*]: [Yuriona] just to let you know the first image i uploaded was my own work the second wasnt, for the simple reason that a so called friend that used my account for a day or two thought it'd be soo much fun to change my entry. i ask you for a second chance, and to stop being so judgmental of things that you dont know the real story behind
2008-02-07 [Artsieladie]: Unfortunately, when someone uses your account, we have no way of knowing whether it is you at the computer or not. This is why we stress to keep your login password to yourself, ONLY. Therefore, any & all activity done under your account, your username, is considered DONE BY YOU. It is your account, so you & you alone are 'account'able for it. Do you know how many times people use this 'somebody-else
2008-02-07 [*mimi*]: well to be honest i couldnt care less wether you let me back in or not because its always the same people that win these contests
2008-02-07 [Morphea]: because it is the same people that enter these contests perhaps
2008-02-07 [BinaryPhoenix]: Well [*mimi*], you could stay angry about this, or you could try from now on to prevent something like this happening again and in doing that, proving yourself better than what people are thinking about you now.
Just my two cents...
2008-02-07 [Jitter]: Elftown Past competitions Pretty apparent that it's not always the same people winning the competitions :P *shrugs*
2008-02-07 [*mimi*]: i do see many repeated names there
2008-02-07 [Morphea]: oh for crying out loud ...,......
2008-02-07 [*mimi*]: you know what i couldnt give less of a s##t about this contest of this place so whatever
2008-02-07 [Morphea]: then why are you still arguing.....!!
2008-02-07 [Jitter]: Then why are you even here? Repeated names only mean that a person's art is very good so as to be voted. Instead of whining you should try polishing your own artistic skills like those "repeated" names have done, instead of trying to plagiarise your way to glory.
I'm sure further whining or aggressive comments will be erased so there's no real use to take this further than needed.
2008-02-07 [Morphea]: Thanks Jitter!!!! eloquent as always :)
2008-02-07 [Cia_mar]: my my....
2008-02-07 [*mimi*]: i entered my own work at first it was fine
someone changed it. . and now i have to listen to this. when i havnt done anything wrong
2008-02-07 [nehirwen]: You shouldn't have given your password away.
Be mad at your friend..
2008-02-07 [Jitter]: To be honest if I was accused of stealing art and was really innocent because someone made me look bad, I wouldn't try to make myself look worse by removing the guard notes. I'd try to talk about it with the person in charge instead.
2008-02-07 [Morphea]: Hear Hear Jitter!....and maybe be a little bit more humble........
2008-02-07 [arthemis_]: Ok, I'm a real big newbie here. *blush* I would love to participate in this contest. Will it be ok if I use some techniques and anatomy out of a book about drawing elves? Or is this also considered plagiarising? It's named: 'Drawing Faeries, A Believer's Guide' by Christopher Hart. Anybody know about that book?
2008-02-07 [Jitter]: I know it! I had the chance to flip through it and loved it ^_^
As long as you don't trace the images it's absolutely ok to use it as reference :) See Copying vs fanart & referencing if you're unsure :)
2008-02-07 [Artsieladie]: [arthemis_] as [Jitter] said. As long as you don't trace, but making your own interpretation
2008-02-08 [arthemis_]: I have used a pose in the book as reference, adding my own things to it. And I used a photoreference of a mouse. And now I have a colorsceme and lineart. Now I need to do a scan and digital coloring. I hope it will be good! *looks at deadline* I'll be on time too.
Edit: I almost forget: thank you for answering!
2008-02-10 [Linderel]: Zomg, actually submitted. xD
2008-02-10 [Jitter]: Gack! Cute! <3
2008-02-10 [Linderel]: *giggle* :P
2008-02-12 [moira hawthorne]: I hope mine is a legit enough reason to have two image enteries... they are the same piece... just flipped and my reasoning is logical
2. EACH MEMBER MAY SUBMIT ONE (1) ENTRY
Exceptions might be offered if there is a valid reason for it.
2008-02-12 [Artsieladie]: Well, more than one entry isn't exactly forbidden, just 'advised' against. It's fine by me! :)
2008-02-12 [moira hawthorne]: thank you... I know it wasnt FORBIDDEN ... thats why I was asking if mine fit the valid reason for a exception... they really are the same faery... even the same art... just one is coloured without the text...
2008-02-13 [arthemis_]: Still working on my pic, I hope it has a change! All your drawings are so cool! Goes back to work fevorishly (is that even a word?)
2008-02-13 [Cia_mar]: feverishly .... you just had an "o" instead of an "e" but yes it is a word....lol
2008-02-14 [arthemis_]: Ah yes, I thought so. I didn't look right to me. You never stop learning English, do you?
2008-02-14 [Cia_mar]: no... i know i certainly dont... and it is my native tongue! lol
2008-02-17 [Hedda]: [moira hawthorne]: It's nice that you show the other image, but it's a bad idea to have both in the same poll as they are the same drawing. The fairies weekly image isn't exactly a fairy illustration either, so if I made the poll, I would just leave that one out.
I'm not bossing this contest though.
2008-02-17 [moira hawthorne]: if they are the same image... to be counted as one illustration,.
and may I ask why she is not a faery?
2008-02-18 [windowframe]: He didn't say it wasn't a faery, but that it wasn't a faery illustration. :) it's more an illustration of a front cover of a faery magazine. :)
They'd have to go on the poll separately, so they can't really count as one entry.
2008-02-18 [windowframe]: Or, it's an illustration of a magazine cover, which just so happens to have a fae on it. :) If someone asked you to show them a picture of a typical race, the first thing you'd show them wouldn't be the front cover of a magazine belonging to that race. :P The coloured entry is great anyway, it looks really good. Why not just go with that one? :)
2008-02-18 [Artsieladie]: [moira hawthorne], [Hedda] said that it's good that you show the 2nd image, but not what he would want in a poll. He said it isn't an illustration, not that it isn't a fairy, but b/c it's 'main focus' is not a fairy image, but in fact a magazine cover, which I think is great, by the way, that your art made it on a magazine cover! Heck, it's not great, it's awesome! Therefore, neither, [Hedda] nor I, object to you having it on the page, but I'm going to word it like one would for a photography session, as a proof photo of where your 'actual' art piece was used.
[ Edit: ] Well, I was going to....lol
2008-02-18 [Jitter]: moira hawthorne: sorry I think there is some massive misunderstandi
Maybe, but this is a Fairy contest not a magazine cover contest
2008-02-18 [nehirwen]: Your colored version is just fine though. :)
2008-02-18 [nehirwen]: I think it's beautiful..imh
2008-02-18 [Yuriona]: Eh? How does slapping on some typical magazine type scripts portray all that exactly? Its an interesting example of what a typical fae magazine publication might be but I don't understand how that demonstrates what a typical fae/fairy is. I also prefer the coloured version and I consider it a much better example of what a 'typical' fae is than some gaudy magazine cover mock up.
I do have a question for the contest mods though. Would a fairy in battle armour be considered typical or would that be more suiting for atypical or even a different section of the contest?
2008-02-18 [Yuriona]: Yeah but not everyone follows traditional Celtic lore or even knows what Faery is (or was since the realm of Faery is forever closed to the world of mortal men. :P ) By typical I believe it was meant 'mainstream' as in Tinkerbell or the Tooth Fairy even. Not everyone sees fairies as omnipotent, immortal beings so there's no point blowing this so far out of proportion. This is supposed to be a fun contest providing examples of what would be considered typical fairy art, not a debate over the philosophies and religious context that you're delving into.
2008-02-18 [Jitter]: Noone is out to get you or your art. A fairy is not considered aa fairy if it doesn't have wings, that was the definition given and I can see only one person complaining. There are so many people here telling you that the colour version is fine but you still consider it as a personal attack. Noone is trying to bend round the rules here just to exclude you.
2008-02-18 [windowframe]: What about the rule of having one entry? We decided you didn't have a valid reason, and now you're trying to get around it by putting two images onto one canvas. it's still two separate images.
2008-02-18 [Yuriona]: Oh grow up already moira. You're the one getting treated like this because you're the only one who makes such a fuss over these things. Its like you deliberately go out of your way to draw attention to yourself then whine when it isn't the sort of attention you wanted.
2008-02-18 [Calico Tiger]: Nowhere in the rules does it say that males can't be in here, Moira. The typical fairy is a small person with things. Doesn't matter if they're male or female (to address a small part of the earlier arguments).
Secondly.... why would you ruin your perfectly gorgeous entry by merging it with the unacceptable entry, thus making the entire image not likely to be voted on?
You're not being singled out in contests. The dragon contest also had entries that weren't acceptable. The only reason it blows up into a big deal is because it's you who generally does the blowing up as Yuriona pointed out above me :-/
2008-02-18 [Hedda]: [moira hawthorne]: As already said by others: You're ruining your good submission, the coloured fairy image.
As stated 4711 times before: This contest is created to get the best possible image to put on the fairy-page. The twin-image image is a collage of your art and not suitable at all for such position.
Why not just be happy with that everyone seem to like the colour-fairy and submit that?
2008-02-18 [Hedda]: Regardless if we allow you to submit the magazine image, it just doesn't fit well into this contest like the colour-fairy does.
I doubt a magazine-cover style of image (or a collage) will even make it to the final. It might be great art, but it's simply not the kind of image we're looking for. The added text and imagery makes it bad in this context.
Seeing a fairy-magazine image on top of a fairy-page would be like seeing a man holding signs with "Buy Viagra here!" in an anatomy book. It just doesn't fit as the top image.
Why on Earth do you want to submit a bad image that doesn't fit when you have a good one?
2008-02-18 [Sunrose]: Artsie didn't say that (here).
You asked her if you could have two entries and she said it was fine by her. She didn't say that having a flipped version of the same image is actually a 'valid reason'.
The winning typical image can only be one image, not two images that are practically the same.
This contest is looking solely for the depiction of a fairy/fae, not a depiction -about- a fairy/fae, which makes the coloured version of your fairy the most suitable as a submission.
You insist that [Hedda] spends his time to answer your questions and request for his judgement, but when he does you continue to argue with him and everyone else here.
2008-02-18 [Sunrose]: Not in the comments here, as far as I can see. You asked if you could have 'two image enteries', you didn't ask if you could have a 'support version'.
Even if you did ask though and she agreed to a support version, it's not considered as an entry. Whether on it's own or together with the other entry, it doesn't comply with what this contest is asking for and we can only vote for one image to win.
[Hedda] has told you this, as have others, and you already have a good image that we all want here.
2008-02-18 [Sunrose]: These are the comments:
2008-02-12 [moira hawthorne]: I hope mine is a legit enough reason to have two image enteries... they are the same piece... just flipped and my reasoning is logical
2008-02-12 [Artsieladie]: Well, more than one entry isn't exactly forbidden, just 'advised' against. It's fine by me! :)
You ask if 'two image enteries' are OK, and Artsie says it's fine.
You didn't say 'support version'. She didn't judge the content of the entry, or whether you had a valid reason, but simply stated that having two entries was fine by her.
If you want to discuss that further, you'll have to take that up with her personally.
Whatever was said, it doesn't change this:
Your magazine entry is not a typical faery, it is an image -about- a typical fairy,
We can not vote for two entries to win as one, only one image can win this contest.
2008-02-19 [deeterhi]: thanks :) the other entry was inspired too much by a particular artist and i felt i should do one completely in my style instead
2008-02-19 [Cia_mar]: :)
2008-02-20 [arthemis_]: Yeah! Finally managed the upload my entry! And for a first time, without crashing the site, I'm fairly proud of myself! I hope it's all within the rules, I checked twice ;)
This piece took me weeks! My my my.... I managed to crash my computer with it. Well, that wasn't a hard deal, I just needed to redo the whole freaking piece. Glad it's finished now. I'm proud of myself. Yeah! *happy dance*
2008-02-21 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: I'm trying to decide.. I've got my work in progress Scarlet's WIP .. but should I put some clothes on her to make her a little more child friendly? She's rather innocent looking.. but still. I'll probably do a proper background by May, but in the mean time.. any ideas?
2008-02-21 [Jitter]: I don't find anything rude with her being in the nude :) Nice work by the way :)
2008-02-21 [your exotic nightmare]: yeah nice work. I like it.
2008-02-21 [Cia_mar]: awe... she is sweet!
2008-02-21 [Calico Tiger]: Agreed, I don't see anything wrong with the nude either. It's tastefully done :)
2008-02-21 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: sweetness! I hate painting clothes.. cause I suck at it. :P
2008-02-21 [Cia_mar]: i know the feeling... not fun at all
2008-02-22 [arthemis_]: I wouldn't put clothes on her either Scarlet. But if you must, maybe a transparent dress or something. I, for one, wouldn't want to miss the perfect anatomy!
2008-02-22 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: alrighty, I'm just going to upload it as is then.. If I ever get around to changing the background then I'll upload a new one.. but since the focus is supposed to be on the Fairy.. I don't think a simple background with take much away from the overall image. Thanks for all the input! :)
2008-02-22 [Hedda]: "Agreed, I don't see anything wrong with the nude either. It's tastefully done"
Someone has cracked into [Calico Tiger]'s account! [Calico Tiger] would never fail to see that the thing that's wrong with tasteful nudity is that it's tasteful.
2008-02-22 [Calico Tiger]: Skitgott!
2008-02-22 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: lol so true
2008-02-22 [Artsieladie]: I agree with [Calico Tiger]! Absolutely!
2008-02-22 [Yuriona]: I asked a question earlier but I don't think I got an answer: would a 'battle' ready fairy be acceptable for this? I have a more recent fairy with butterfly type wings wearing beetle shell armour and carrying a battle axe but I'm not sure she would be considered a 'typical' fairy. ^^
2008-02-22 [Artsieladie]: Glad you are mentioning this again! :) It sounds like it would, but w/o actually seeing it, we can't say yes or no for sure. Daisy's has 'actual' butterfly wings. Can you place the link here? I would really like to see it!
2008-02-22 [Yuriona]: This is it on my Elfwood gallery: http://www.elf
I'll probably update her though before I enter her if its allowed.
2008-02-22 [Artsieladie]: It's a lovely drawing, Yuri! :D Let's see what others think.
2008-02-22 [Kyrinn]: Fairies!! *picks up fly swatter* heh, just kidding. I may have something for this after all...
2008-02-22 [Thistlewood]: *just my opinion* I think she would fit in. In Ireland and Scotland , it told in tales, that the fairy folk went into battle with outsiders to defend the isles.
2008-02-22 [Artsieladie]: Yes, [Kyrinn]! Put that fly swatter away! You'll make all of the lovely fairies fly away! lol Thanks, [Thistlewood]! :D
2008-02-22 [Yuriona]: That reminds me of the scene in Labrynth where Hoggle is spraying the fairies. XD Ok, I'll see what I can do to get her cleaned up and possibly coloured this time provided that she's ok to enter.
2008-02-22 [Calico Tiger]: I agree as well about it fitting with the theme. If she was missing wings, yeah... then there'd be a problem, imho. Of course, [Hedda] may disagree! :D
2008-02-22 [Kyrinn]: I have an idea for one, but I just have a question: Its a character from a roleplay in which the fairy like creatures are actually called windlings. They still have the dragonfly wings and are small, but called windlings. Would that be alright?
2008-02-22 [Artsieladie]: Cali, I think would have a better idea what you speak of, with characters & all, but the wings sound like the right idea. ...& [Calico Tiger], you're right, he may! ;)
2008-02-23 [Calico Tiger]: Kyrinn plays Earthdawn! Windlings are pretty much just fairies XD
2008-02-23 [Artsieladie]: See, I knew you'd know! ;)
2008-02-23 [Kyrinn]: Yay, you know the system! *dances around* And its a boy fairy too!
2008-02-24 [arthemis_]: What do you guys think of my picture? Do I need to change anything? Can anyone give me feedback? I would apreciate it.
2008-02-24 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: I think her forearms are a little too long.. and I think it could use a little shading.. but other than that it's great!
2008-02-24 [Artsieladie]: I agree with [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]. I think the forearms & maybe the arms, themselves, are too long. Some shading & some highlighting would add to its depth, perspective. Otherwise, I like the colors & variations of. It is an attractive piece! :D
2008-02-26 [arthemis_]: Thanks, I think the arm-problem is because I didn't want to draw hands. I'm terrible at sculpting and drawing hands. They always end up like mickey mouse hands or worse. Shading and highlighting is another one of my quests. The original (much bigger piece) shows more of the colorcoordinat
2008-02-26 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: try to not use the burn and dodge tool when you do your shadows. I know it's tempting, but they never look realistic. I found a great image that gives the three basics, (shadows, normal, and highlights) and that's what I used to do the skin tones on my most recent pic.. which you can see on the page.
Hands are a pain in the ass I know.. it took me over 5 tries to get the fairy's right hand to look natural.. and I even had a reference. Try finding a reference online.. I find looking at/ copying Marvel comic hands helps a lot. They don't go into crazy detail, but the hands still look real.
2008-02-26 [windowframe]: Dodge and burn can be very effective and very realistic, but you have to be very good at using them. And I always found using my own hands a better reference. :P Either look at it, or take a photo, but then, I've never really understood the hype about hands being difficult, I always find the torso more difficult than the hands. :)
2008-02-26 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: I find that they always make it look plasticish.. but maybe I just sucked at it. :P Most tutorials that I've read tell you not to use the dodge and burn tool though...
I find the colouring on the hands to be difficult.. not the actual drawing.. the shadows always go screwy.. and I've always found the torso easy! Weird.. I guess we all have different strengths
2008-02-26 [windowframe]: I think most tutorials tell you to avoid it because, as I said before, you have to be very good at using them for it to look good. But that's a bad argument to avoid them. :P If we all avoided everything that was hard to be good at, we wouldn't get very far, no one would play a string instrument, for a start. :P I'm pretty sure [iippo] did an image that was all dodge and burn, and it looked great. I find the torso hard with it's contortions, and sometimes it seems impossible to get breasts right, especially if they're being pushed around by something like a corset. :P
2008-02-26 [nehirwen]: I never get breasts right O.o that's one of my big struggles too :)
2008-02-27 [Artsieladie]: [arthemis_], if you have a bigger version, we would like it! We like large versions. :)
2008-02-27 [arthemis_]: I like large versions too, but I try to make shadows and stuff first. There are little mistakes that bother me with the background which don't show up in the small version, but it does in the big version. So I'll need to fix them first. Where can I find a good tutorial on shadowing? And what do you mean [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]? Which page should I look at? *blush* I used slightly darker and lighter colors for the 'depth', and then smudged the edges so nobody can see. Resulting in the fact that nobody can see *rolls eyes*. At the moment I'm also busy with an arttrade. So, I just need to juggle two projects.
2008-02-27 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: This page of course! My little neckid fairy was coloured that way. :)
2008-02-27 [windowframe]: Smudge tool is something I avoid, (but again, I know artists who do everything with the smudge tool, and it looks fine), personally I use a hard edge brush on a low opacity, and just colour drop like mad until the colours blend (that's a crappy explanation), the Elftown Tutorials might have some good hints, though. :)
2008-02-29 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: I airbrush mostly... with a little bit of smudging. I rarely use the blur tool though.. and it used to be my best friend. It's funny how things develop. Oh, and Nice Entry [Phenomenon.]It's cute!
2008-02-29 [Kyrinn]: Nice perspective on the bubble! ^_^
2008-02-29 [Calico Tiger]: I love the smudge and blur tools >_>
2008-02-29 [Kyrinn]: Done effectively, smudge and blur are awesome! :3
2008-03-01 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: I blur by smudging. :P
2008-03-01 [Phenomenon]: Yeah, me too, works great on shadows but always makes the edges look fuzzy though. And thanks for the nice comments :)
2008-03-01 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: hey, no problem. I do a basic colour first, for the entire shape (like the skin, then one for the wings, hair etc) and then select it and keep that selection, it helps with keeping the edges crisp.
2008-03-01 [Phenomenon]: ... wow, I never thought of selecting the areas, thanks alot I'll try it out right away!
2008-03-01 [windowframe]: Why don't you just lock the layer the base colour is on? Personally, I thought that selecting the area made the edges a bit too jaggy.
2008-03-01 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: how would you colour on that layer then? I use GIMP.. not photoshop, how would you lock on GIMP?
2008-03-01 [windowframe]: Not sure if you can lock them in gimp, never used it.
2008-03-01 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: it's like photoshop, but free and with less filters and stuff...
2008-03-01 [windowframe]: I know *what* it is, I've just never used it. :P I know it has layers, but not what you can do with them. :) I got photoshop for around £25 off ebay. :)
2008-03-01 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: lol alrighty, well I'll try to figure it out then. :P
2008-03-02 [arthemis_]: I select the area I work in too, when I want to make shadows and stuff and folds etc. With Photoshop. But I never heard of locking the layer.
2008-03-02 [Calico Tiger]: "lock layer transparency". One of the best, handiest layer tools ever :D
2008-03-02 [windowframe]: If you can lock the layer instead of using a selection tool, do it. :P
2008-03-07 [Thistlewood]: She's beautiful [Kuruni]!
2008-03-07 [The Scarlet Pumpernickle]: Ooo! I've seen her before! *still loves*
2008-03-07 [Kyrinn]: I agree. Beautiful! *thumbs up*
2008-03-08 [Artsieladie]: I would like to open a discussion here on this contest page on everyone's opinion about the entries here, as to whether or not anyone believes they are 'typical' or 'atypical'. I think to be fair, we the Mods should be willing to hear what ETers thoughts are, especially from those that are entering. Also, [Hedda] suggested this & I agree. Perhaps, we can alleviate some of the controversy that seems to surround the issue of typical vs atypical. We the Mods appreciate everyone's input. Thank you! :)
2008-03-08 [Kyrinn]: I thought we were done with this but here's my two cents:
Most everyone you mention Fairies to will describe what we see here in this contest. Little winged things (with dragonfly wings) with little pointed ears. Heck, its what I think of when I hear the word Fairies. Tinkerbell would be an example of this type of fairy but the size can vary from teeny to, say 20 inches tall. *shrug* Plus in my mind they are mischievous and always moving, curious little things. I do understand that "Fairy" can imply other sorts of creatures but the most common one is what ive described, in my own opinion, of course.
I am planning on entering this contest as soon as I have it colored. although I may just put him up now as a place holder. >:D
2008-03-08 [Artsieladie]: Thank you, [Kyrinn]! We appreciate your input. In an attempt to keep from happening again, what is happening in the current Mainstreet poll, about whether or not an entry should or shouldn't have made it into the 'typical' poll, it might be best to talk about it on the contest page to alleviate this issue in the future. *anxious to see your fairy* :)
2008-03-08 [Kyrinn]: Oh, do you mean the dragon one? *nods* Ive not been watching that one since its in voting but I can go there and put in my two cents there too. Wouldnt that make it four cents then? XD And I may just put him up either tonight or in the morning. ^_^
2008-03-08 [Artsieladie]: *grins* I like your rationale! Oh, goodie! I'll be here to see. :D
2008-03-09 [Kuruni]: thank you [Thistlewood]!!
2008-03-09 [Artsieladie]: Ooh! I see a new fairy! Gonna' have all the lady fairies squabbling over him! lol ;)
2008-03-09 [Kyrinn]: Oh, he wont mind the attention! :D
2008-03-09 [Artsieladie]: I bet not!
2008-03-09 [Yuriona]: Hey! He's got a big sword! XD Wanna spar?? *giggles*
2008-03-09 [arthemis_]: Ow wow, a male fairy!!!
With fairy's of the 'normal' length I find it difficult to judge if it's a fairy or an elf. Is it an fairy when it does have wings and when it doesn't is it an elf per say? Did Oberon and Titania have wings? I think that fairies can be wood people with wings, or fairytale fairies with wands. I think they can be mischievous but there are fairies who are generous and caregiving.
I don't think I see an atypical fairy in the entries above.
2008-03-09 [Kyrinn]: Hey, Keelyf would LOVE to spar. So few his size in the gaming realm he is from, lol!!
2008-04-21 [Chrilith of Akhai]: Is it just me or is it somewhat creepy when a contest page goes all silent before the deadline has even passed?
I've been working on my entry for so long, I can barely shake off the feeling I'm working on a picture for a contest for last year or something =D And still it might not be done in time... so that goes to show how good I am with deadlines.
2008-04-21 [nehirwen]: You're not the only one. ;)
I'm still working on my entry too. :)
2008-04-21 [windowframe]: Me three. :P
2008-04-21 [Artsieladie]: No pressure. There's still 11 more days. :)
2008-04-22 [Kyrinn]: I still need to get my fella colored..
2008-04-23 [Chrilith of Akhai]: Well, you still have a week to do it... just don't take as long as I'm taking. I've been coloring my entry for the last two months!
2008-04-23 [Yuriona]: I doubt mine will be ready by the first. I've done nothing with it and honestly I just don't have the motivation to finish it. *shrugs* Sorry Artsie...
2008-04-24 [Artsieladie]: *pouts* Sniffle, sniffle. *orders a mountain of motivation & hands the package to Yuri* Will this help? *hugs* ;)
2008-04-24 [Yuriona]: If it were only that simple. :)
2008-04-24 [Artsieladie]: Hmm...I hear ya. If only life were this simple, period. :'P
2008-04-24 [Yuriona]: Where's that dang easy button they always show on TV? *pouts* I want one.
2008-04-24 [Artsieladie]: Me, too. It's more obscure than a needle in a haystack! :P
2008-04-25 [arthemis_]: I updated my fairy. I didn't get the change to work more on the shadows, but I did add hands, so now she is more anatomically correct. And there is now a bigger picture if you click on it. Yeah! I finally start to get the hang of Elftown and it's Wikis!
2008-04-25 [Artsieladie]: Very nice. :) It takes a little while to get the hang of ET, but it grows on you or it certainly has with me. ;)
2008-04-26 [Artsieladie]: Since there are several folks here that could use some extra time to finish their entries, what say everyone if the deadline is extended a little? Would this help? Speaking for myself here, I would much rather be flexible in the favor of entries than worry too much about the deadline being adamantly adhered to. ;)
2008-04-26 [Kyrinn]: Ohhh man I would love you forever if you could swing that. Im trying to make space in my work schedule for some digital painting and it looks like I wont make the May 1st deadline unless its pushed back just a bit. *worships*
2008-04-27 [Artsieladie]: Well,, dear, your nicely colored entry would make me delighted! I know how things go, especially when you're trying to juggle all the aspects of real life: parenting, work, etc., & so what you would 'like' to do can & often does get pushed to the back burner. I see no reason why the deadline can't be extended, actually. :) So, lady, no need for worship, but I'll settle for your colored entry! *winks & hugs*
2008-04-27 [Kyrinn]: WOOT! Thanks Artsie! I need to have it done before May 16 because Im leaving for a long trip. ^_^
2008-04-27 [Yuriona]: Uh oh... does that mean I have to finish mine too? =O
2008-04-28 [Artsieladie]: What's that uh-oh? ;) It would be nice to see yours, too! :) If you can't, you can't. I'll still love ya, ya know! *hugs* No problem [Kyrinn] & all that need more time. Always glad to assist to enable more participation. :) The middle of May deadline might conflict with [Hedda]'s Medieval Smileys Contest, but I'm sure a doable deadline can be decided. ;)
2008-04-30 [arthemis_]: ahhh does that mean I need to wait longer to see who wins?? whaaa :P lol
2008-04-30 [Chrilith of Akhai]: 'Lo and behold! At last my grandest masterpiece hath arrived!
*Ahem* Not that it's so grand but it was fun to make. And surprise, surprise, it's in time for the deadline, too!
2008-05-01 [Artsieladie]: [tehUzume], nice, but...you need to upload it to Elftown. ;) If you need some sort of help with this, just give a holler. :)
2008-05-14 [Vou]: *wants to draw a Faerie suddenly* D:
2008-05-14 [Kyrinn]: Darn it.. I need a time machine. :C I will try to have the colored version up before the first but its going to be close..
2008-05-14 [Artsieladie]: Yeeees. Ok.. :) Oh, & when you find this time machine?....Pl
2008-05-14 [Kyrinn]: :D You will be first on the list for it, hon!
2008-05-15 [Artsieladie]: Ooh! Me, first? *feels special* ;) Now, may I help you in the search of this? Me thinks we'll need to get past some treacherous creatures. No? *looks worried*
2008-05-15 [Jitter]: I don't want a time machine but I wouldn't say no for a teleport one :o
2008-05-16 [Artsieladie]: Hmmm...I'll take one of each! lol
2008-05-16 [Kuruni]: Long contest, but great entries! When this is over, perhaps you want to check a contest i have....it´s been there for a while....
2008-05-20 [Morphea]: gees---alot of good new entries since I last saw....*applau
2008-05-22 [Artsieladie]: It seems there was a poll set up for the community to vote for their favourite beastie. The purpose was to feature each creature in accordance to the amount of votes each received. The next creature in accordance to this poll, which represents the voice of the community, was supposed to be ECM Elf. Well, one person decided that the community's voice was of no importance, so I guess her voice is more important than ALL of yours! This is no opinion. It's fact. For further info, please read my latest diary. There you'll find a link to give you all the full scoop.
I try my best to see that the community is represented, because I believe this is what a good Council member should do, represent the voice of the community, since the community is the greater, the majority.
Thank you all for listening!
*hugs to all*
/ [Artsieladie]
2008-05-25 [Hedda]: What [Artsieladie] writes is simply not true. There was no such poll. The polls <poll:76254> and <poll:73926> were set up to ask the Elftowners about what creatures they liked the best, and which order we should have in the ECM can be something totally different, and I think everyone (including the ones voting in the polls whom [Artsieladie] claims to speak for) can agree on that it's best to have very different creatures after each other.
If there would have been a poll on "What creature should we have next?" then it would have been a different matter. But doing such a poll is pretty pointless as it's not that important in which order they come and no one is protesting, except [Artsieladie] who has no valid arguments. We have much more important things to ask the Elftowners.
2008-05-26 [Future Dictator]: o_O *confused by everything*
2008-05-26 [windowframe]: Just ignore it then, best thing for it. :)
2008-05-29 [arthemis_]: June?? Since when is the deadline expired till June?? *sigh* Do I have such patience? o_O
2008-05-29 [Yuriona]: Well I don't think i'm gonna get my fairy finished simply because I have no motivation or inspiration to finish her. Sorry guys and good luck to everyone!!
2008-05-29 [Kyrinn]: I might just have time to get mine colored provided I can get to the markers for it. My photoshop is all screwy so I dont really trust it for much of anything other than photo editing at the moment. >.> I need a new computer dang it..
2008-05-29 [Mom]: It's a shame Yuri...she is absolutely gorgeous. Love the details.
2008-05-29 [windowframe]: June is only a few days away, Arthemis. O.o
2008-05-31 [Captain Rachel Black]: pulled that one in at the last minute 0.0
2008-05-31 [arthemis_]: Ow yes... *blush* Sorry guys! I just... forgot to turn the calender to the right month o_O
2008-06-01 [Kyrinn]: *whew* I made it! *boogies*
2008-06-01 [arthemis_]: Yeah! The deadline has been reached :D My first contest entry ever will be evaluated... *bites nails* And Kyrinn, good for you!
2008-06-01 [Artsieladie]: [Kyrinn]..ish happy to see you got yours coloured & entered! :D Now the lady fairies won't be able to resist him! lol
If anyone has a question in regards to an entry for another 'closed' contest also being here, please feel free to read in the Elftown Contests' Forum this thread: [497330] :P
2008-06-01 [arthemis_]: Maybe a stupid question - I'm prone to stupid questions - but how does the entries get evaluated? Will there come a poll, or are moderators checking things out?
2008-06-01 [windowframe]: Since there are so many entries the crew will vote on the art to get it down to about 10 entries or so, which will then go to public poll, and everyone can vote on Main Street. (But if we put them all up on Main Street now it would be a very long poll and not very fair on people who have slow connections to load all those images) :)
2008-08-29 [Kuruni]: yay! *dances a a weird dance that oddly looks like riverdance and ballet*
2008-08-30 [Kuruni]: *blush*
